municipal wastes

Municipal waste represents a significant part of the total amount of waste generated worldwide. They include various types of waste produced by households, companies, institutions and industry.

The amount of municipal waste produced worldwide is significant and continues to increase with urbanization and population growth. Proper management of municipal waste is crucial to prevent environmental pollution and risks to public health.

Municipal waste recycling

The recycling of municipal waste in the European Union (EU) is crucial for the transition to a circular economy and reducing the impact on the environment. In 2017, around 46% of all municipal waste was recycled or composted in the EU.  This target will gradually increase as the EU works to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and increase the proportion of recycling.

In 2019, slightly more than half (59.2%) of municipal waste was prepared for reuse and recycling.

MATERIALS THAT CAN BE PROCESSED

  • MIXED WASTE

Mixed municipal waste refers to the waste that remains after separating out distinct fractions from the municipal waste stream, such as paper, glass, metals, plastics, bulky waste, and hazardous waste.

  • SANITARY PADS

Most sanitary pads are made from a combination of cotton, synthetic fibers, and plastic, which complicates the recycling process. By reducing the volume using shredders, sanitary pads are easier to dispose of in incineration plants with appropriate filtration.

  • FOOTWEAR

Waste footwear is footwear that can no longer be used due to wear, damage, or other reasons. Waste footwear can be dropped off at special collection points where textiles and footwear are collected separately.

  • FABRIC

Waste fabric is textile that is no longer in use or has become unusable due to wear, damage, or other reasons. In Slovenia, approximately 17,000 tons of waste textiles are discarded annually, of which only 15% is processed in an environmentally friendly manner.
